Breaking off from Amherst, New Hampshire in 1781, Mont Vernon incorporated in 1803, only recently celebrating its 200th anniversary.  The town's acreage expanded in 1851 when several residents from a neighboring Lyndeborough parish split off and joined Mont Vernon.  The reason for the unusual spelling of the name has been debated for over a hundred years.  Some believe it is a simple clerical error, some believe it is an homage to the French-Canadians that inhabited the area at the time, but most agree it is a tribute to Mount Vernon, home of General George Washington.  An attempt was made in 1855 to rename the town "Mount" Vernon, but failed.  When agriculture dropped off after the Civil War, several hotels set up shop and Mont Vernon became a tourist spot known for it's beautiful views of lush greenery.  The advent of the automobile eventually ran most of the grand hotels out of business, though a few remain today.

The Lamson Farm, built by the first colonial settlers, is maintained by the town for preservation and general recreation.
